LOVE AGAIN Essay

Introduction

Switch on your television and catch the news programme. Notice that there will always be a disaster, hysteria, paranoia, wars, suicide-bombings and so on. As we both (Harman and Suhirman) discussed the issues in general, we realised that the source of all these human destruction was due simply to the lack of “Love”. It may sound cliché, it may sound nonchalant, and it may even sound absurd for us both to be making that statement without giving a solid and substantial ground of reasoning.

But think again, think again on the basic meaning of “love” and perhaps it does make sense after all. As quoted from the Encarta World English Dictionary, “love” translates –

Love (n)
1. An intense feeling of tender affection and compassion
2. A passionate feeling of romantic desire and sexual attraction
3. Somebody who is loved romantically
4. A romantic affair, possibly sexual
5. Strong liking for or pleasure gained from something
6. Something that elicits deep interest and enthusiasm in somebody
7. Used as an affectionate word to somebody loved
8. U.K. used as a friendly term of address, usually to a woman (informal)
9. The mercy, grace, and charity shown by God to humanity
10. The worship and adoration of God

Love (v)
1.To feel tender affection for somebody, for example, a close relative or friend, or for something such as a place, an ideal, or an animal
2.To like something or like doing something very much
3. To feel and show kindness and charity to somebody

Apparently, both of us were immediately fascinated by the word LOVE itself. No doubt, we knew that this theme had been so often used in our visual arts however; we are still interested to develop this theme, which we entitled ‘Love Again’.

Project Objectives

Knowing that our society is in a healthy decent condition, run by our able, just and fair government based on meritocracy and power of the people, ‘Love Again’ aims to sustain the knowledge and awareness about peace and harmony in this multicultural community. Through visual arts ‘Love Again’ look forward to share the notion of harmony sustenance.

Essentially, Love is the result of a strong positive emotion from imagination and feeling.

When I am in Love, I am ashamed of all I have ever said about love
Although a commentary in words makes things clear,
Wordless Love is yet clearer and more illuminating…
Like the pen that was busily writing until it comes to Love, and then split apart.

Rumi (Mathnawi)

Based from the poem above Rumi (Mathnawi), ‘Love Again’ will further explore and investigate the notion of love in our current society. ‘Like the pen that was busily writing until it comes to Love, and then split apart’. In responding towards what was written by our great poet, we as a visual artist will look into the abstraction of what it meant by ‘then split apart’.

Apparently, ‘split apart’ has varied colourful meaning, which people can depict differently. Hence, ‘Love Again’, will explore, investigate and document the public views and interpretation of love as part of our research and process work that will be showcased during the exhibition.

Project Description

Love again is an audio and visual commentary through the use of video interviews, photography, and print media. It is not so much about making a propaganda or guerrilla statement but more towards the ideas of documentary-advertisement to the general masses and public. The issue is raised in a light-hearted manner but not bringing down the basic ideas on the need to love and the various “kind” of love albeit stereotypical to a certain extent. It hopes not to provoke but gently spread the message across viewers.

People from various walks of life will be interviewed on their understanding of the word love. Photograph re-enactment of general depiction of the “various” love will be documented. Postcards, badges and various print-media will be presented throughout the whole duration of the exhibition.

In terms of media, the exhibition will explore the innovative notion of digital media and the conventional state of arts using its ability to articulate the means of intercommunication, information and entertainment.

‘Love Again’ promise to be a landmark event in the history of local multimedia art development. It aims to highlight the endeavours and works of digital art in the local art screen. It reflects the maturity and fertility of mind and the creativity of local artists that have often been obsessive over the notion of digital art.

If we fail to ‘Love Again’ then we fail to live.
